Hi Charlie. Interested to follow your pursuit of dry feet in a cold wet world. Been doing something similar over here in the UK, hiking zero-drop since 2011. Most of this has been done in Vivobarefoot’s various offerings – off road hi, tracker and tracker FG. And I’ve had a lot of wet feet experiences. I’ve just pre-ordered the new Kuuva 5 – without any great hope of dry feet but just because there’s nowhere left to go! Tried the Sole Runner transitions, but they failed at the very first field of wet grass in spite of a lot of prepping with waterproof wax.

My experience has been that these boots all either let the wet stuff in through the seams – in the vivo case usually after a handful of wet walks, or else it pours in through the “breathable” tongue in wet grass or driving rain. The latest Vivo – the FG – has actually proved the best to date at keeping out the water… but at a cost. That “FG” (firm ground) is devoid of traction in wet, muddy conditions (very common here for about half the year) and I have fallen over twice and slipped innumerable times – whereas I had never fallen using the old “SG” (soft ground) sole. So Vivo finally give me dry-ish feet – but with a sole that only works in firm dry conditions. Unbelievable… since I prefer wet feet to a fractured skull, my search also goes on. Awaiting the K5 with interest…

  I’d be interested to hear what you think of the K5! I haven’t had much need to wear any boots since spring. The cold wet weather is just returning to Maine now. I tried an experiment with some overboots on the Kuuva 2s but the overboots got caught on something and ripped. Not a good solution.
  
  I’m disappointed to hear that the Vivos have underwhelmed because I was thinking of trying something from Vivo out next. Perhaps I’ll hold off for now…
